Besides the beautiful rocky and sandy beaches you can also find several places that are worth a visit.

Castillo de Moraira. This fortress stands on a rocky hill at the Ampolla beach and you simply can't miss it. It was built in the 18th century to protect the town against attacks by Berber pirates. It is built in an unusual form, known as pezua de buey (ox hoof) because of the semicircular southern outside wall and the straight northern outside wall.

Church Mare de Due dels Desemparats. This church was built between 1875 and 1878 and is located in the center of Moraira. The church has a rectangular shape and a modest interior, except for the portrait of the Virgen de los Desamparados and two beautiful mosaics.

Torre de Vigilancia del Cap d´Or. This tower stands at the highest point of the cape Cap d'Or, on the edge of the rocky coastline. The tower has no door. To climb the tower a rope ladder was let down from the top. There were also two cannons on top of the tower. This all to protect the port of Moraira against attacks of Berber pirates.

Moraira best holiday spot in Europa

"Moraira, best holiday spot in Europe

MORAIRA. Atravea, the German agency for holidays, which is part of the TUI Travel PLC, International Tourism Consortium, has chosen Moraira as the best place to enjoy a holiday in Spain. It is an optimistic panorama for the coming season.

The company focuses on the results of surveys among the people who spent their holidays and this time it was a small Spanish village that took the credit. The choice of Moraira was a big surprise even for the Germans, although all holidaymakers were responsible for that choice, because according to them, Moraira offered exactly that ideal combination of tranquility and quality. Before the results were known, it was thought that the award would go to a place on Mallorca.

Since 2010, this award has been awarded. Before that, the ideal holiday resort was located in the Netherlands, Italy or in Germany itself. This pearl on the Costa Blanca, which is administratively part of Teulada, achieved an average of 4.61 points on the blog of Atreveo. Moraira, in the 80's still an unsightly fishing village, has now grown into a fashionable seaside resort, not large but with all facilities and above all very quietly situated at the foot of the Golden Cape, the Cap d'Or. restaurants and bars, the large harbour, the promenade, the huge parking lot, the large weekly market, the marked nature walks, the possibilities for water sports .... the combination of all this was reason for the customers of Atrevea to choose Moraira.

Atrevea began awarding the award in 1997, after its founder Marcus Hültenschmidt had the idea of not only booking holidays, but also sending them a survey and asking their opinions about their stay. The idea came about after one of the customers wrote a letter about his holiday home in Niewvliet in 2001. That was the first opinion about a holiday home on the Internet. Since 2006 the company is part of TUI Travel PLC and is managed by Marcus Hültenschmidt and Dirk Froelje. Meanwhile, Atrevea has a thousand web locations, eight of which are among the largest travel locations in Europe."

Please note that if even the Germans (!!) think that Moraira is the best holiday spot in Europe, then surely it's Mediterranean heaven ;-)
